Library, Archives and Photographs

RESEARCH:

GOALS
The materials contained in the Archive Library at the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center is maintained and improved toward the following goals:

• Provide information resources regarding the Chilkat Valley and scope of the general museum collection for research purposes available to both the museum staff and public.
• Provide an environment, materials and equipment that allow resources to be easily navigated and accessible, thereby encouraging the public to utilize available resources and accommodate required research by museum staff.
• Minimize damage to resources through standardized storage, handling procedures and usage guidelines

GENERAL INFORMATION

Hours of Operation:
The Archive Library is available by appointment. Drop-ins will be assisted dependent upon staff availability. Requests over the phone by those unable to visit the Archive Library will be charged a service fee.

Visitor Information:
All non-staff visitors who either physically visit the Archives, or request research by a staff member from afar, must be recorded on the Archive Visitation Log. Visitors must also read and sign a copy of the Archive Use Guidelines before handling any resources.

The museum is able to provide various copying services. Local residence may receive up to 20 complimentary B&W copies of resource material from the museum archives. Charges may apply to other services and are due at the time of request (see Schedule of Fees). If services are performed, a Services Rendered Receipt will be completed and filed at the museum; visitors may also be given a copy of the receipt if desired.

Museum volunteers are included as non-staff visitors unless their volunteer work for the museum is specific to working in the archives.

Purpose of Forms:
Recording is not a means to limit access to archival material, but to record how the public uses the archives and which materials are most sought after. This information can help the museum meet the needs of the public better and monitor wear on archival objects.
