“The Outliers” The Portrait Society of America Alaska and Hawaii Members Art Show

Opening reception is Friday, May 5th, from 5-7pm at the Haines Sheldon Museum

Public portrait demonstrations will take place with Yuko Hays and Donna Catotti on Wednesday, May 31, from 5-8pm and on June 20th from 6-9pm with guest artist Kerry Dunn

The Portrait Society of America is a non profit organization whose purpose is “to foster and enhance the understanding of the practice, techniques, and applications of traditional fine art portraiture and figurative works.” As Alaskan Ambassador for the organization my job is to disseminate information throughout the state, facilitate opportunities, and promote the organization.

When I started to make plans to curate a third Portrait Society show of Alaska members, it was suggested to me that I include Hawaii. Why not? On most maps we are both out on the edge of the page, in boxes ‘the outliers’. Six Alaskans and two Hawaiians agreed to send their work.

I have included a prize-winning signature member of the portrait society, Kerry Dunn, one of the lead teachers at Studio Incamminati of Philadelphia, who is in Haines in June teaching an oil painting portrait workshop. He will give a free public portrait demonstration with a live model on June 20 from 6-9pm at the Haines Sheldon Museum. Yuko Hays and I will do a portrait demo at the museum on May 31st, from 5-8pm. Please join us for any or all of each demo. Bring your sketchbook.

Due to the non-profit status of PSoA, the museum will not be making sales. All inquiries about purchase should be directed to the individual artist whose contact information is provided on the wall by their work.

I hope you enjoy the show!

Donna Cattoti

Alaskan Indian Arts Oral Histories

Funding from the Alaska Humanities Forum is helping us capture and preserve the stories of living artists who worked and studied at Haines-based Alaska Indian Arts from the late 1950’s – 1990’s.  These oral histories together with images and objects from our related collection will form the basis of a future travelling exhibit exploring the journey of Tlingit and Northwest Coast form-line art, and the significant importance of Alaska Indian Arts.

“Troller” is an ornate, nautically-inspired, handmade guitar created by Haines Instrument Maker Rob Goldberg, made with local Sitka Spruce. A playable work of art of the highest caliber, Troller was purchased with grant funds from the Museums Alaska, Art Acquisitions Fund.

A new photo album donated to the collection provides us with a remarkable look at Lutak Inlet in 1917.  Over 200 sharp, clear images of families, workers, housing, and the operation at the Alaska-Pacific Salmon Cannery, located roughly near the site of the former Schnabel Lumber Co.

Collections Management

Support from the Museum Alaska Collections Management Fund is allowing HSM to rehouse and catalog early images and archives that relate to Haines (Chilkat) Mission and Haines House (period: 1880’s – 1960).  Haines Mission stood on the current site of the museum.  Haines House, located on the site of today’s Presbyterian Church, was operated as a boarding facility principally for Alaska Native youth, many of whom were orphans or wards of the Alaska Territory.  Colorado-based collections management expert, Peggy Schaller will be in Haines for three weeks in May for this engagement.
